Kanye West - Graduation (2007)

There comes an unfortunate moment in the career of many an artist when the music they create is largely irrelevant to the way they are publicly perceived. For better or worse, celebrity and not substance is this person's driving force, and it is not they, or the music-buying community, but the media who decide their ultimate fate. At this moment, they become more compelling as public figures than as musicians, and there is little they can do about it. Either this process will immortalize them (as with Elton John and the Rolling Stones) or it will swallow them whole (Michael Jackson, Britney Spears).

With the arrival of his third album, Graduation, Kanye West teeters on the edge of this chasm.

Kanye projected to top 50 Cent this week

| | |

Kanye West appears to be winning his head-to-head battle with 50 Cent for record sales supremacy, but both rappers are likely to move fewer units than they did with their previous albums.

This is the verdict of a Reuters news article that cites Billboard magazine as saying West is projected to sell between 575,000 and 700,000 copies of his new album Graduation, while 50 is likely to sell between 500,000 and 600,000 of his new offering, Curtis.

Clash of the...uhh... titans?

It won't exactly be a battle of wits, but the rumoured debate between 50 Cent and Kanye West is apparently a go. The two will face off Tuesday on BET to argue the merits of their respective albums - Curtis and Graduation -- according to the Associated Press.

Evel Knievel launches lawsuit against Kanye West

| |

MTV.com reported today that renowned daredevil Evel Knievel is suing rapper Kanye West over West's video for the song "Touch the Sky." The video depicts West as a character named "Evel Kanyevel" who wears a white jumpsuit similar to the one Knievel is known for sporting, and mimicking a stunt that Knievel staged in 1974.

Knievel's lawyer is quoted in the MTV article as saying, "Mr. Knievel has a trademark on Evel Knievel and an extraordinarily well-recognized white jumpsuit. Kanye West and Roc-A-Fella records [West's label] are undoubtedly familiar with intellectual property rights. Mr. Knieval [sic] is not too happy with it. He wants to be compensated for uses of his likeness and trademark."

The word "genius" gets batted around far too much these days. Forget Shakespeare, Stephen Hawking and Einstein... according to Rolling Stone, Eminem qualifies. And so does Charlie Weiss, the head football coach at Notre Dame, due to his ability to call the right plays at the right time. And then there was Ray Charles, God bless his soul, who really didn't do much but marry church music with secular lyrics, and inspire a very good movie starring Jamie Foxx.
