Mute Math upset with Warner Bros/Word
Submitted by matt on March 9, 2006 - 2:34pm. Modern Rock | Mute Math | News StoryPaul Meany, formerly of the Christian act Earthsuit, founded Mute Math. All their members are openly Christians. The rock act also plays Christian festivals and tours with other Christian acts. Despite all these facts, last September Mute Math filed suit against Warner Bros Records and Word Records, according to an article posted March 6 on AOL News. The problem is that Mute Math does not want to be attached to a Christian label. Meany said he never wanted their EP to be released by Word records. "It was just assumed that because that's where I once was, that was where I was always going to be, I had no desire to be the Christian version of a real band." Meany's attorney Kevin Kookogey said they released the EP under the impression it would not carry the Word name. "We had an offer to do a deal with the EMI Christian Music Group," says Kookogey. "We did not do that deal because we were not promised that we would have direct access to Capitol and Virgin. We wanted total mainstream credibility, and then have it sold back into the Christian market if it were successful in the mainstream." Warner Music is unable to comment on the pending lawsuit, according to the article, but they recently made an effort to settle and inquired about going forward with Mute Math, according to Kookogey. The band was recently offered an opportunity to play on the Vans Warped tour, and sources say other labels like Sony BMG's Columbia are interested in them. According to Mute Math's representatives, Warner Music voided their contract but Meany acknowledged that his band can't sign anywhere else until the lawsuit is resolved. Kookogey says the band has received feedback on the issue from fans, but that no one said they would not buy their new record. For more on Mute Math, you can check their official web site.
