Almost Famous: Reality T.V. Edition
Submitted by ben on December 15, 2006 - 5:49pm. Modern Rock | News StoryThere have been few good reasons to watch MTV of late, and one-time music "bible" Rolling Stone is struggling to be a relevant voice in the post-hippie world. Last summer, however, the two combined forces to create a reality TV show that may help cure what ails both parties.
I'm From Rolling Stone, which premieres on the cable network on January 7 at 10 p.m., follows the summer-long journey of six young would-be journalists who work at RS, competing for assignments, pursuing interviews with music's heavy-hitters and struggling to meet deadlines. The carrot at the end of the stick is a contributing editor position at the magazine.
Evel Knievel launches lawsuit against Kanye West
Submitted by ben on December 12, 2006 - 7:57pm. Hip-Hop | Kanye West | News StoryMTV.com reported today that renowned daredevil Evel Knievel is suing rapper Kanye West over West's video for the song "Touch the Sky." The video depicts West as a character named "Evel Kanyevel" who wears a white jumpsuit similar to the one Knievel is known for sporting, and mimicking a stunt that Knievel staged in 1974.
Knievel's lawyer is quoted in the MTV article as saying, "Mr. Knievel has a trademark on Evel Knievel and an extraordinarily well-recognized white jumpsuit. Kanye West and Roc-A-Fella records [West's label] are undoubtedly familiar with intellectual property rights. Mr. Knieval [sic] is not too happy with it. He wants to be compensated for uses of his likeness and trademark."
Has Relient K done something right with their new single?
Submitted by ben on December 11, 2006 - 4:09pm. Modern Rock | News Story | Relient KRelient K released the first single from their upcoming album Five Score and Seven Years Ago recently. There are ads all over the place begging you to pay to download it, but you can preview "Must Have Done Something Right" on their myspace page for free. As of the time of this post, however, "Fallen Man," which is packaged with your 99-cent download, isn't available for preview this way.
"Must Have Done Something Right" is a very up-beat, jangly pop song that is miles away from the band's punk roots, and even markedly removed from their 2004 modern rock album mmhmm. With a chorus melody vaguely reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom," this is a love song about two people who love each other so much they disgust the people around them.

Derek Webb's 'Mockingbird' giveaway reaches 65,000 downloads
Submitted by ben on October 30, 2006 - 11:06pm. Derek Webb | Folk | News StoryDerek Webb once heard a story about legendary musician Keith Green that stated Green gave his music away for free because he cared so much about allowing people to hear and engage with it.
Green died in a plane crash in 1982, long before the days of free MP3s and the proliferation of the Internet. To simply give music away was, as Webb puts it, "a very difficult and expensive thing to do at that time."
